May 13-19, 2018 is National Women’s Health Week

National Women’s Health Week begins on Mother’s Day each year. During this time, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will be encouraging women of all ages to take an increasingly active role in their personal health and wellness.

Part of these organization’s initiatives will focus on educating women on the importance of diet, exercise, and mental health, as well as the importance of well-woman check-ups and mammograms for women aged 40 and older.

All Star X-ray would like to encourage all practices to join us in celebrating National Women’s Health Week from May 13-19, 2018. To help inform your patients, here are a few tips about diet, exercise, and the importance of getting a check-up and mammogram at least once a year.

Diet

Choosing a healthy eating plan is important for overall health. It helps patients to manage their weight and encourages them to get out of their comfort food zone and choose foods they may not have eaten before.

Encourage your patients to have fun and choose meals that:

  • Are fat-free or low-fat
  • Emphasize vegetables, fruits, and whole grains
  • Include lean meats
  • Are within daily calorie needs

Exercise

Another important part of a woman’s overall health is physical activity. Exercise helps patients to control and maintain their weight and helps to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome.

Other benefits include:

  • Increased bone and muscle strength
  • Improved mental health
  • Improved dexterity

Mental Health

Mental health is important at every stage of life and includes emotional, psychological, and social wellness. It can also help you to handle fatigue and stress as well as help you to make healthy choices.

Well-Woman Check-Ups

Patients should visit their doctor at least once a year for a well-woman check-up to determine the current state of their health, what they’re doing right, or what they can do to improve their health. For women 40 and over, a this is also a good time to schedule a mammogram.

Mammograms

1 in 6 breast cancers occurs in women aged 40-49. Patients are strongly encouraged to schedule a mammogram during National Women’s Health Week to help detect and reduce the risk of breast cancer.
